All About Diamonds
Origins, Modern Choices & The 4Cs
Few gemstones capture the human imagination quite like a diamond. Revered for millennia for their unrivaled hardness and mesmerizing optical fire, diamonds represent the pinnacle of fine jewelry craftsmanship.
Selecting the perfect diamond has always rested on the foundational standard known as the 4Cs—Cut, Color, Clarity, and Carat weight. However, in today's market, choosing a center stone also means understanding where your diamond comes from and how modern science has expanded your options.

Earth-Mined Diamonds: Ancient Geological Masterpieces
Natural diamonds are among the most remarkable creations in the physical universe. Formed between 100 and 150 miles beneath the Earth’s surface under conditions of extreme heat and immense pressure, these pure carbon crystals waited billions of years in the deep mantle. They were transported toward the crust by rare, supersonic volcanic events known as kimberlite eruptions—geological phenomena that have not occurred for millions of years.
Finding gem-quality rough requires moving mountains of earth. In fact, roughly 80% of all mined diamonds lack the transparency or structural perfection required for jewelry and are routed directly into industrial applications, like drill bits and saw blades. Because gem-quality natural diamonds are finite, geologically rare, and labor-intensive to extract, they remain timeless stores of generational heritage.

Modern Advancements: Lab-Grown Diamonds & Simulants
Today, modern technology allows clients to select center stones tailored precisely to their personal aesthetic, ethical preferences, and budget.
Lab-Grown Diamonds: Whether grown using High-Pressure High-Temperature (HPHT) presses that replicate the Earth's mantle or Chemical Vapor Deposition (CVD) plasma chambers, these are 100% genuine diamonds. They are structurally, chemically, and optically identical to natural diamonds, sharing the exact same Mohs hardness rating of 10. They allow clients to achieve larger carat weights or higher color and clarity grades at a significantly lower initial cost.
Moissanite (The Simulant): Composed of silicon carbide, moissanite is a distinct mineral rather than a diamond. While it offers impressive durability and high dispersion (rainbow-hued fire), it behaves differently under bench heat and is a simulant rather than a true diamond.
Choosing Your Shape
Before balancing the 4Cs, the first step in custom design is selecting your gemstone's silhouette. From the classic Round Brilliant to the elegant Oval or vintage-inspired Emerald cut, the shape dictates the entire personality of your ring.
The Universal Standard: Navigating the 4Cs
Whether selecting an antique earth-mined diamond or a modern lab-created gem, its beauty and value are determined by the 4Cs. At Joel McFadden Designs, we approach these criteria through the trained eye of a master jeweler, helping you balance each attribute to maximize fire, brilliance, and value.
- Cut: The single most critical factor in a diamond's visual performance. Even a diamond with flawless clarity and color will appear dull and lifeless if cut poorly. More About Cut →
- Clarity: Every diamond tells a geological story through tiny internal features called inclusions. Clarity grades measure the size, number, and location of these microscopic characteristics. More About Clarity →
- Color: In white diamonds, the industry standard actually measures the absence of color. Subtle shifts in body color dramatically affect both appearance and rarity. More About Color →
- Carat: Carat is the universal metric for a diamond’s physical weight, not its visual diameter. More About Carat →
